BoxKite: Listen

Those Eyes

(BoxKite)
Those Eyes was inspired by the 1967 Miles Davis song "Circle in the Round" and is the one song on this disc that comes closest to following a jazz song structure. The structure consists of a cycle of chord changes that are repeated three times with each cycle concluding with a three bar statement in 3/4 time. But rather than having a different instrument solo during each cycle (as usually happens in jazz), each cycle was given a different mood. The first time through creates a droning, ambient mood. The second time gives the feeling of a more conventional song with vocals and strummed guitar. The drums in these two sections primarily add color to the mood rather than explicitly state the beat. The last time through the cycle brings back the ambience of the first run through but with a difference. Electronic drums and a new bass line now work together to explicitly state the beat to give a more electronic/dance feeling.
Those eyes are saying something
Staring out with an entangled, indelicate mean
I'm feeling like I should not be here
When you look at me with those eyes
